Governor Laura Kelly signed a statewide law this spring, Sub for House Bill 2299, requiring every Kansas public school, including USD 458, to bar students from using personal electronic devices from the start of the school day through dismissal.
The ban covers phones, smartwatches, tablets, and earbuds. Students must turn devices off and store them away from their person, and the rule holds through class, lunch, recess, and passing periods. There are limited exceptions for students with an IEP, a 504 plan, or a documented medical need, and the law doesn't apply to devices issued by the district itself.
