Scam Alert: Calls Targeting Leavenworth County Families

A phone scam is making the rounds in the Leavenworth County area, and it's a particularly cruel one. Scammers are calling families of inmates at the Leavenworth County Jail, impersonating law enforcement and claiming the jail is overcrowded — but that their loved one can be released immediately to house arrest if they pay a bond over the phone. Authorities are warning residents not to send cash or payment information over the phone. If you receive a suspicious call like this, hang up and contact the Leavenworth County Jail directly at their official number to verify. (Reported by KCTV5 on August 6, 2026.)

Storm Recovery Underway After High-Wind Weekend

A powerful weekend storm ripped through Leavenworth County, bringing wind gusts up to 80 miles per hour and leaving behind downed trees and power lines across the area. Crews have been working to clear damage and restore service. If you have limbs or debris down on public right-of-way in Basehor, contact City Hall to report it. Be mindful of any remaining debris around the Civic Campus and residential areas as you head out this week.

US-24/40 Speed Limit: City Continues Push for Safer Corridor

The years-long effort to make the US-24/40 highway corridor through Basehor safer took a meaningful step last year — KDOT installed new 55 mph speed limit signs along the stretch from 142nd Street to 166th Street in August 2025, down from the longstanding 65 mph limit, following community advocacy and a tragic fatality in June 2025. The city continues to work with KDOT on further safety improvements along this corridor. Drivers are reminded that the reduced 55 mph limit is now in effect.
