The National Weather Service issued an Extreme Heat Warning last night at 8:46pm, running until 8pm Friday, with heat index values reaching up to 108. That covers both first days of school, Thursday for PK-5, 6th, and 9th graders, and Friday for the rest of the district.
The NWS instruction is direct, drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check on relatives and neighbors. Heat related illness risk rises sharply during a stretch like this, especially for kids walking to bus stops or waiting outside.

A few things worth doing this week: send a filled water bottle every day, dress kids in light, breathable clothing, and if your student walks or waits for the bus, look for any shade along the route. Sunscreen matters too, especially for outdoor recess or first day photos on the porch.
If your student has any heat sensitivity or a medical condition, it may be worth a quick note to the school nurse before Thursday. And remember, the new statewide cell phone policy means kids cannot text you directly if they are feeling unwell, so make sure they know to tell a teacher.
