A century in the making. The Leavenworth County Fair officially opens today under the centennial theme "100 Years of Growing Together," and the day is packed start to finish in Tonganoxie.

It kicks off at noon with the Opening Ceremony at the flagpole, where the Leavenworth High School ROTC presents the colors and the Tonganoxie High School Band performs the National Anthem. The Annual Fair Parade rolls through downtown at 6:30pm, and the night wraps with the Al Dyer Memorial Draft Horse Pull at the grandstand at 8pm - free admission, with a non-perishable food donation encouraged.

Don't forget: Fair Photo Contest entries are due by 6pm at the Administration Building, with judging at 7pm.

After days of dangerous heat, the National Weather Service's Extreme Heat Warning expires at 7am today. It's the first morning in nearly a week without an active heat alert for our area.

It's still warm - today's high reaches 89 - but without the triple-digit heat index that's had us all cooped up indoors. Combined with rain chances building through the week, it's a welcome shift heading into the fair's opening days.

As the centennial celebration kicks off, it's worth a look back. The Leavenworth County Fair traces its roots to 1926, when it began as a downtown Tonganoxie celebration of a bumper corn crop. A century later, that single-day celebration has grown into a five-day tradition drawing thousands from across the county - livestock shows, carnival rides, a rodeo, a demolition derby, and generations of 4-H and FFA families showing what they've built and raised all year.

This year's theme, "100 Years of Growing Together," nods to exactly that: a county that has grown up alongside its fair.
