🚂 Did You Know: The Story Behind Our Town's Name
A quiet Sunday feels like the right time for a bit of hometown history. Basehor is named for Ephraim and Reuben Basehor, two brothers of Pennsylvania Dutch descent who came to Kansas in 1854. Ephraim first worked as a hired hand for a local farmer before eventually buying the farm himself, along with other land in the area.
The town as we know it didn't take shape until the railroad reached the site in 1889. Once the tracks were in, Ephraim platted his land into a townsite, and it was officially dedicated on November 30, 1889 - named, fittingly, after the family that built it.
Basehor wasn't incorporated as a city until 1965, decades after that first townsite plat. So next time you're downtown, you're standing on ground that's been "Basehor" for over 135 years.
