Yesterday's storms cleared out and took the humidity relief with them. Today is mostly sunny and 92, but the number that matters isn't the air temperature - it's the heat index, which could reach 110 starting this afternoon.

From here it climbs: 96 Sunday, 98 Monday, and 94 Tuesday, all with dangerous humidity stacked on top. The Extreme Heat Watch runs from 1:00pm today through 7:00pm Tuesday.

Rain isn't in the picture until midweek at the earliest. This is a stretch to take seriously - more on that below.

The National Weather Service in Kansas City/Pleasant Hill issued an Extreme Heat Watch early Friday morning covering Leavenworth County and much of eastern Kansas and western Missouri. It takes effect this afternoon at 1:00pm and runs through Tuesday at 7:00pm.

The forecast calls for dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 110. In the NWS's own words, heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events - and four straight days of it is what makes this one different from a normal Kansas hot spell.

The official guidance is simple and worth actually following:

Need somewhere cool? The Basehor Community Library at 1400 158th St is open 9am to 5pm today and 1pm to 5pm Sunday - free, air conditioned, and nobody minds if you stay a while. The Bonner Springs Family YMCA pool is another good option; check their schedule for open swim times.

One more note: a Watch means conditions are favorable for dangerous heat. If the NWS upgrades it to a Warning, that means it's happening - keep an eye on weather.gov over the weekend.

The Bonner Springs Farmers' Market runs 8:00am to noon this morning in downtown Bonner Springs, and today the "go early" advice is more than a suggestion - the heat watch kicks in at 1:00pm, right as the market wraps.

Late July is peak season, so expect tomatoes, sweet corn, peppers, and peaches from area growers. Get there closer to 8 than noon, bring water, and your afternoon is free to hide indoors with a bag of good produce.

The Leavenworth County Fair opens Tuesday, July 28 in Tonganoxie for its 100th year under the theme "100 Years of Growing Together." Opening day starts with the Opening Ceremony at noon, builds to the Annual Fair Parade at 6:30pm, and closes with the Al Dyer Memorial Draft Horse Pull at 8:00pm.

Here's the part to plan around: the heat watch runs through Tuesday at 7:00pm, which covers most of opening day. If you're going, treat it like a summer festival in the deep south - go later in the evening if you can, wear a hat, bring a refillable water bottle, and find shade between events. The livestock barns and the grandstand seats both bake in the afternoon sun.
