Grab the umbrella on your way out. Showers and thunderstorms are likely today with about a 74% chance of rain and a high near 80 - the wettest day we've had in weeks, and the gardens are not complaining.

Then the pattern flips hard. Saturday starts with a stray shower before clearing to mostly sunny and 92, and Sunday and Monday turn hot and cloudless at 97. That's great news for two things on this week's calendar: Sunday's movie on the lawn should be dry, and fair week is shaping up sunny.

If you're heading to Tonganoxie Tuesday, plan for a hot one - hats, water bottles, and a shady spot under the big top.

The countdown is nearly over. The Leavenworth County Fair opens Tuesday, July 28 in Tonganoxie under the centennial theme "100 Years of Growing Together," and opening day is stacked from noon to night.

It starts at 12:00 noon with the Opening Ceremony at the flagpole, where the Leavenworth High School ROTC presents the colors and the Tonganoxie High School Band plays the National Anthem. The Annual Fair Parade rolls at 6:30pm, and the Al Dyer Memorial Draft Horse Pull takes the grandstand at 8:00pm - free admission, with a non-perishable food donation encouraged.

One deadline worth circling: Fair Photo Contest entries are due Tuesday at 6:00pm at the Administration Building, with judging at 7:00pm. Entry forms are on the fair website under Events.

Sunday's Cinema Sundays pick is officially posted, and it's a good one: The Goonies takes over the City Hall lawn this Sunday, July 26, starting at dusk.

It's free, it's family-friendly, and after a 97-degree afternoon an evening under the stars will feel earned. Bring lawn chairs or blankets, bug spray, and cold drinks - and maybe explain to the kids beforehand that yes, this is the one their parents keep quoting.

Football season officially starts today. Chiefs rookies and quarterbacks report to training camp this Friday, July 24 at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, with veterans following on July 29.

If you want to see Patrick Mahomes and company up close, the first practice open to the general public is Thursday, July 30. Most sessions are free but require reserved tickets in advance at chiefs.com/trainingcamp, and parking runs $8 per vehicle. Three dates carry a $7 admission: August 1, August 7, and August 8 (Family Fun Day).
